Why Petan?I didn't grow up with sports. Watching or playing. I really didn't discover hockey until my late teens when a roommates mom had bought us season tickets for the Portland Winterhawks as a Christmas gift (sometimes it pays to have rich friends!) After a few seasons and really falling in love with the game I'd gained a tremendous respect for few players especially for either the way they played or how many points they put up. For me, Nic Petan always stood out (even before being named captain in 2014) for his playmaking and night-in, night-out effort. After discovering the hobby and spending a few years collecting cards of my favorite NHL team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, I started to pick up rookies from guys I'd watched play their junior hockey in Portland. This was around March of 2019, a week or so after Petan had been traded from the Winnipeg Jets to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Having been recently moved to a new NHL team, a lot of Petan's higher-end stuff had become available through eBay so I had picked up a few cards here and there, but more and more cards were starting to pop up. After a 'real' one-of-one card (UD Premier Platinum Blue Spectrum RPA) went up for auction I decided to bite the bullet and go all-in on collecting Petan. I'm now up to 6 one-of-one parallels not including printing plates or stamped buybacks and I'm looking to complete every single set of his eventually!
